Constructing a page with pretty graphics is not web design. A real expert in this field who is worth their salt will have some understanding about how search engines read web
pages. They will know how to make all the interdependent structures needed for web site creation fit together like the pieces of a puzzle. They will understand correct:
- Sitemap implementation
- WC3 compliance
- Search engine friendly urls
- Title, headers, and overall content structure
- Ability to use today’s smart phone technology (view your web site on a cell phone)
- The speed at which the contents of your web page loads
- Make sure scripts are in place to report web site updates to Google and other search engines
- A working robots.text file
- Can multiple or most popular browsers (browser compatibility) view your web page?
- Does the designer have samples of his work readily available?
- Can you reach them for any questions you may have
